TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Retired Chinese domestic security Chief Zhou Yongkang (周永康) was involved in a plan to assassinate Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping (習近平) in order to take over the country, New York-based Mingjing News reported on Dec. 5.
Zhou, who had already been restricted for his alleged involvement in numerous corruption scandals, will likely face serious consequences, according to the report.

The alleged assassination plot is the latest major scandal for the ruling Communist Party, and could eclipse the controversy stirred by former Chongqing leader Bo Xilai (薄熙來), who was sentenced to life in prison for bribery, corruption and abuse of power earlier this year.
Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection Wang Qishan (王歧山) told the Central Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party that Zhou's secretary, security guards and drivers are assisting with the investigation, the report said.
